» What is this?

It's a list of places in Tribeca where you can actually meet single women. Which places. What time to go. And whether to go by yourself or bring a friend.

I go to these places, I pay attention, and I write down what I saw. That's the whole site. Scroll down for the list.

[ 01 ] About

I'm a smart, single 27-year-old dude in Tribeca. I moved to Manhattan to build a real life here, and I still haven't found a good way to meet women that isn't a dating app. So I started going out, paying attention, and writing down what I saw. Which places have people. What time they show up. Whether they're sitting alone or out with friends. If you're single and around my age in Tribeca or the West Village, this should save you a lot of walking around.

[ 02 ] Why I'm Doing This

I think meeting someone should feel like luck. But you can set things up so luck has a much better chance of finding you. That is all this is.

» Some things I believe:

  • Apps are a numbers game. I'd rather have a good story. Swiping works. It has just never once felt like a story worth telling.
  • Dating is not a money game. If it takes bottle service to hold someone's attention, you have their attention, not them. Meeting great people should be accessible to anyone who is smart and has their act together.
  • Independence is the most attractive quality there is. I'm building a full life and looking for someone who's building her own, not someone looking for a life to join.
  • Who someone is matters more than the spark. Chemistry gets you a month. Character gets you the rest.
  • You have to actually leave the house. Nothing happens from your couch. That is what the list below is for.

[ 03 ] Who This Is For

✓ This is for you if

You're in your late 20s, you have your act together, and you're looking for an equal. Someone smart, independent, building her own thing. You'd rather earn a great story than pay for a shortcut.

✗ This is not for you if

You're looking for someone to fund your life, or someone to stay home and run it. You think dating is solved with a credit card. You want tricks instead of reps.

There's nothing wrong with wanting those things. This just isn't the log for it.

[ 04 ] How I Judge a Place

Five questions. The first three tell me whether a place is worth going to at all. The last two tell me what to do once I'm there.

First: is this place worth going to?
  1. Who's there. Do single women in their 20s actually go to this place?
  2. Alone or in groups. Are people sitting by themselves, or are they out with friends? If it's groups, bring a friend or skip it.
  3. What time. Are they there at this hour? No place is good all day. A place is only ever good at certain times.
Then: what do I do once I'm there?
  1. Today, or over time. Can I meet someone the same day, or is this a place where you show up enough times that people know you first? Those are two different things. Don't mix them up.
  2. Can you actually talk to people. Is there a normal reason to start a conversation, or would it be weird?
Solo venues vs. group venues. Some places are full of people sitting alone (approach solo). Some are full of groups (bring a friend, work as a pod). Mixing these up is the #1 unforced error.

[ 05 ] The Week

The venue log tells you where. This tells you when. Candidly: this is a weekend system. I work weekdays and I'm not going to pretend otherwise, so Monday through Friday stays off the board until I have data that says it shouldn't be.

Two live windows a week. Sat/Sun 10:00a–1:30p for solo venues, Sat/Sun 4:30–7:00p for group venues. That is the whole system right now.
Open question: Friday evening is the only weekday worth testing, and it is untested. Everything after 7:00p is unmapped.
Careful: a good hour does not make a place good. Sunday late morning is also brunch, so some rooms fill with couples and families. Pick places where people come alone.

[ 07 ] Field Notes

Aug 23, 11:00 AM: Went to Old Days on Sunday morning, right in the middle of what I thought was the best window. It was almost all couples and families, with barely anyone there on their own. Lesson: the right hour does not save the wrong room. Sunday late morning is brunch time, and some places fill up with people who came with someone. The time slot is still good. I just have to pick places where people show up alone.
Aug 22, 3:44 PM: Ran first recon loop of 7 Tribeca coffee spots. Lesson: weekend coffee-shop prime time ends ~3:30. The solo lingerers are gone by mid-afternoon; what's left is laptops and groups. New rule: cafés Sat/Sun 10:00a–1:30p, wine bars 4:30p+, and the 2–4p dead zone is for errands and gym.
Aug 22: Confirmed the solo-vs-group distinction in the field. Stafili = group venue (needs a pod). Meadowland / Toby's = solo venues.
